It is important to take social media
seriously as it is not a passing faze. Get familiar with it if you are not.
Classes are available at the Apartment Association as well as through on line
venues such as Splash Media. You do not have to use every site but at least
pick one or two and post on them regularly. Be committed to these sites and
really connect with your audience. Share event photos, pet photos, quotes,
invitations to upcoming events, recipes and maintenance tips. These are just a
few ideas or you can take a look at other community’s social media sites to get
ideas. One very popular item trending now is tweeting a resident or future resident
a cup of Starbucks coffee! This is a fun way to invite a guest in to take a
tour of your community or ask a current resident to renew. Post at least once a
day and try and keep it positive. Posting rules and what not to do can turn
people off and send them away from your site. If you cannot post daily or you
are trying to keep too many sites up and running, downsize and give one site
your full attention. It’s best to have one site ran really well rather than
several that get ignored. There are many sites and it can get overwhelming. You
may start by doing a survey to see what sites your residents use regularly. Ask
future residents when you’re filling out the guest card. “What social media
sites are you on or what sites do you use daily?”
